Portsea paradise lost

The disappearance of thousands of tonnes of Portsea Beach sand since the dredging at Port Phillip Heads has left locals looking for answers. Was it the wind, higher tides, or the swell that took the beach? The mystery has deepened with the recent dumping of hundreds of tonnes of rock near both sides of the pier, especially as there’s no project information on-site to explain what’s happening and who’s responsible.

Portsea Beach - gone for good?

Government bodies are generally proud to declare their role in high profile public works. Apparently not on this occasion! But they’ll have to overcome their shyness sometime soon. The works so far are but a bandaid compared to what’s required to stop continued erosion.

What we are seeing on the surface is only a minor repercussion of the great damage that has occurred under the swell!

The sand will continue to shift all around the bay, probably for the next decade while it adjusts to its new flow rates.

What has happened to the sea grass meadows that are the nursery for most species of life in the bay?

Will it ever be blamed on the perpetrators – Brumby, Garrett and the PoMC?

    Nope – they’ll be long gone – I hope!!

Our current governments both Federal and State are the greatest bunch of environmental vandals this country has ever seen.

Don’t start me on the destruction of our civil rights!
