Hats off to Guy Boston for giving birth to 3206 Beach Patrol in 2009. By all accounts it wasn’t a difficult birth, partly because he’s the original ‘nice Guy’; but also because the Beach Patrol concept is so simple. Plenty of local families from the 3206 postcode are more than happy to don red T-shirts and clean up the beach for an hour a month; and then follow up with a social get-together. Since then, many more local Beach Patrol groups have formed to cover the north-eastern shores of the bay from Port Melbourne to Chelsea; and they’ve collected (literally) tonnes of trash!
Now a whole new chapter in the Beach Patrol story is about to unfold with the launch of 3016 Beach Patrol at Williamstown Surf Lifesaving Club, at 1pm on Saturday November 22. This is the first Beach Patrol west of the Yarra. The launch event will include a clean-up, BBQ, screening of ‘Baykeepers’ (our award-winning short film on plastics in Port Phillip Bay), and contemporary folk music from Harry Brown. Way to go Willie! More info on Beach Patrol
