‘Grey to Green’ project leads the way…..
Collaboration with City of Greater Geelong and the National Centre for Coasts and Climate to monitor the effects of installing a semi-submerged breakwater off Point Richards is a golden opportunity to learn more on how to manage coasts and rising sea levels.
With support from the Victorian Government’s ‘Port Phillip Bay Fund’ Baykeeper and Gordon TAFE (Geelong) Conservation and Land Management students are monitoring the effects of the installation on the beach and inter-tidal shallows. We’ve recorded sand surface levels, conducted shoreline shell surveys and dune vegetation mapping before the recent installation and will repeat the studies regularly over the next 2 years. Members of the public will join in during school holidays. The rare find of a Balmain Bug (Ibacus peronnii) is just one of the highlights so far!
