When you’re 2 metres underwater bagging pests from a grassy seabed the native Granular Seastar – Uniophora granifera (pictured on the right) can be easily mistaken for the pest Northern Pacific Seastar – Asterias amurensis (on the left). Mistaken identities is just one of the things covered in a new guide to removing Asterias from local habitats. The guide provides community groups with all they need to know to take action, from getting a permit to disposal of the collected pests.
Port Phillip EcoCentre collaborated with Earthcare St Kilda to produce the guide with funding from the Federal government ‘Caring for Country’ program. The guide can be downloaded from this site (see above right).
